DISCERNMENT COUNSELING
Online Discernment Counseling
A structured, thoughtful process for couples who are uncertain about the future of their relationship and want greater clarity about what comes next.
You may have spent months or even years wondering whether your relationship can change. Perhaps one of you is considering separation while the other wants to keep trying. Conversations about the future may leave you feeling pressured, defensive, hurt, or further apart.
Discernment counseling offers a different approach when you’re not sure whether to stay together or separate. Rather than trying to fix the relationship before you’ve decided whether to work on it, we focus on understanding how you arrived here, what each of you is experiencing, and what your options may be.
Discernment Counseling Focus Areas
- Uncertainty about staying together or separating
- Different levels of commitment to the relationship
- Feeling emotionally disconnected or increasingly distant
- Repeated conflict or longstanding unresolved concerns
- Understanding each person’s contributions to relationship difficulties
- Differentiating longstanding patterns from differences that need understanding or accommodation
- Navigating ambivalence, grief, fear, or guilt about the future
- Understanding the impact of relationship decisions on children and family life
- Exploring whether meaningful relationship change is possible
- Clarifying what each person needs to make an informed decision
- Considering next steps with greater clarity and intention
Clarity Without Pressure
Discernment counseling is different from traditional couples therapy. The immediate goal is not to repair the relationship or persuade either partner to stay or leave. Instead, we work toward a clearer understanding of the relationship, each person’s role in its difficulties, and the possible paths forward.
My approach is warm, direct, structured, and neurodiversity-affirming. We consider how personal history, protective responses, communication differences, neurodivergence, and competing needs may have shaped your relationship. Understanding these influences can help clarify what might be changeable, what may require acceptance or accommodation, and what each person is willing to work on.
The process typically involves up to five sessions, with opportunities for both joint conversations and individual reflection. Together, we explore three possible directions: continuing as things are for now, moving toward separation, or committing to a defined period of couples therapy focused on meaningful change.
The goal is greater clarity and confidence in your next steps, whatever you ultimately decide.
